INVESTMENT TRENDS
Cost Categories
The allocation of research budgets across salaries, operating costs, and capital investments afects the eiciency of agricultural R&D, so detailed cost category data were collected from the government agencies as part of this study. During 2001–08, salaries at DAR accounted for 49 percent of total expenditures, operating costs for 45 percent, and capital investments for 6 percent (Figure 5). The Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) initiative compiles, analyzes, and publishes data on institutional developments, investments, and human resources in agricultural R&D in low- and middle-income countries.
