2 Day Nuclear Stress Test

OVERVIEW

The nuclear stress test is a TWO-DAY diagnostic test. An IV or injection will be placed in your arm
or hand to allow a radioactive tracer to help image your heart. This helps to determine if your heart
is receiving adequate blood supply. Two sets of images will be taken, one day with your heart under
stress and the other day under normal resting conditions.

PREPARATION: Please follow these instructions or your test may be rescheduled.
DO NOT EAT FOR 4 HOURS PRIOR TO THE TEST. YOU MAY EAT A SNACK IF DIABETIC.
IF YOU TAKE INSULIN, EAT THEN TAKE ½ YOUR INSULIN DOSE. BRING A SNACK.
DO NOT DRINK COFFEE, TEA, SODA FOR 24 HOURS PRIOR. INCLUDING DECAF.
DO NOT EAT/DRINK CHOCOLATE PRODUCTS FOR 24 HOURS PRIOR TO TEST.
DO NOT TAKE MEDICATIONS WITH CAFFEINE (Anacin, No Doz, Excedrin, Darvon)
DO NOT TAKE THEOPHYLLINE, PERSANTINE, AGGRENOX 48 HOURS PRIOR TO TEST.
NO FLIP-FLOPS OR SANDALS. Wear comfortable walking shoes (tennis shoes preferred).
DO NOT DRINK FLUIDS FOR ONE (1) HOUR PRIOR TO THE TEST.
ARRIVE 10 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT TIME.
DO NOT TAKE THE FOLLOWING MEDICATIONS FOR 24 HOURS PRIOR TO THE TEST:
● Atenolol / Tenormin / Tenoretic ● Toprol / Metoprolol / Lopressor
● Propranolol / Inderal
● Sotalol / Betapace
● Bisoprolol / Zebeta/ Ziac
● Nadolol / Corgard / Corzide
● Carvedilol / Coreg
● Timolol / Blocadren / Timolide
Exercise Nuclear Stress Test
This test is designed to help you reach your maximum heart rate while walking on a treadmill. The test consists of 3-minute stages in which the treadmill speed and incline increase. Your EKG, heart rate, and blood pressure are monitored during the test. Adenosine Chemical Stress Test
Your physician has determined that a traditional treadmill test might not produce accurate results. As a result, a pharmacologic or medication stress test will be performed. Adenosine is a short-acting medication that has the effect of dilating blood vessels to simulate exercise. Dobutamine Chemical Stress Test
Your physician has determined that a traditional treadmill test might not produce accurate results. As a result, a pharmacologic or medication stress test, called Dobutamine, increases both the heart rate and the force of contraction of the heart, which simulates exercise.
RESTING DAY OF TEST:
You will be injected with a radioactive tracer in a vein in your arm/hand. You will wait approximately 30 minutes before imaging of your heart, which lasts 20 minutes.
INSURANCE CO-PAYMENTS:
Prior to the appointment, all patients (except those with Medicare Only), please verify your co-payment for this test with your insurance company. Prior to the test, call member services (phone number is on your insurance card) and verify the dollar amount required. Co-payments for diagnostic testing may differ from office visit co-payments. This amount
varies from $0 to $200 dollars per test or may be a percentage of the actual cost of
the test. The contract that you have with your insurance carrier determines this amount.
Our office has no influence on the amount owed at the time of service.

Results:
You will obtain your results at your next follow-up visit with your cardiologist. Prior to
leaving our office, please make sure you have a follow-up appointment for test results. The physician will give your stress test results at your next visit once all testing
has been completed. Make sure you have a follow-up visit with your doctor.
