It is widely known that disease and military conflict with Europeans killed many Native Americans. What else, stemming from European contact, led to many Native American deaths? Africans have a relatively high prevalence of sickle-cell anemia. Europeans have a relatively high prevalence of cystic fibrosis. Both traits are genetic (i.e. hereditary) and quite harmful. One would expect them to eventually die out. Why, then, according to Diamond, do Africans and Europeans have these genetic traits? Hoozah for Britain and her institutions! How might the different institutions have led to different levels of economic success? Galenson, at least in the reading you were assigned, did not specifically address property rights and political liberties in French Canada.
