When the Coca-Cola business started on 8 May 1886, there was only one manager, only one salesman and onlyone ’factory worker’ in the company and this was Dr John Pemberton. Now Coca-Cola is a 50 billion-dollarbusiness with millions of employees all over the world.
There were four main ingredients in the original Coca-Cola formula: lime, cinnamon, coca leaves, and the seeds ofa Brazilian shrub. Dr John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, mixed all these ingredients in a brass kettle in hisbackyard. He then sold the non-carbonated beverage in Atlanta's largest pharmacy, Jacob's Pharmacy. It cost fivecents. Coca-Cola was a nerve and brain tonic and a medical elixir. Later on Dr Pemberton added carbonated waterto the syrup to make Coca-Cola.
Who gave Coca-Cola its name? Frank Robinson, one of Dr Pemberton's close friends. He also wrote the famousCoca-Cola logo. The beginnings of the Coca-Cola company were not easy. Dr Pemberton spent $76.96 onadvertising, but he only made $50.00 in profits. Dr Pemberton was ill and did not have much money so he sold aportion of the Coca-Cola company to Asa Candler. After Dr Pemberton's death Candler bought the whole companyfor $2,300!
On January 31 1893, Candler patented the famous Coca-Cola formula and a year later he opened the first syrupmanufacturing plant. In 1899 Candler started the large-scale bottling of Coca-Cola. In 1915, the Root GlassCompany made the famous contour bottle for the Coca-Cola company. Candler aggressively advertised Coca-Colain newspapers and on billboards and later sold the Coca-Cola company to Ernest Woodruff for 25 million dollars.
