Ontario has designated the week beginning on the third Sunday of November as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment. During Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week – November 17-23, 2013 – Ontario students, school staff and parents are encouraged to learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being. We will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week at Sunset Park Public School as well. On Wednesday, November 20th, we will stand up against bullying by all wearing PINK in recognition of bullying awareness and prevention. Staff will share read alouds and have discussion about bullying and how we can heighten awareness of bullying and its impact on the school community. At Sunset, we will also talk to students about telling the truth, and how important it is for students to tell an adult if they see inappropriate behaviour. You can support this at home by encouraging your child to never be afraid to tell any adult if they see a problem (e.g., teacher on duty, educational assistant, secretary, the principal/vice-principal. So what makes a successful cross country season? Would it be winning three banners for the school to hang up in our gym at the Near North Cross Country Championships (overall champions, girl’s champions and boy’s champions)? Would it be having over 90 dedicated and enthusiastic students training since the first week of school? Or would it entail displaying outstanding sportsmanship by cheering their hearts out at all the meets (amazing school spirit)? The answer to these questions is a huge “YES” to all the above. This cross country season was very rewarding for all the coaches as we had both a highly talented group of young runners and also an amazing amount of students (we had over 78% of the junior population on the team) who made a commitment to themselves to get involved in a sport which improves your overall physical health. So congratulations to the entire team for being crowned the overall champions at the Near North Cross Country Championships. The coaches extend their gratitude to the parents for all of their support and the students for their hard work. We hope to see you out next year once again to get involved in a great sport. On another note, the boys and girls basketball teams are busy training for the upcoming tournament at the end of the month. They’re working really hard during recesses to learn a new sport. Best of luck to the coaches and all of the dedicated team members as you attend the tournament in late November. GO ROYALS GO!!
