It’s almost Spring – soon flowers wil be popping up everywhere, including our bulbs we planted with the
Neighborhood Grant funding a while back. We have three grant requests this Spring. 1) Matching money to replace the trees at the Sunset entrance (see the Landscape Committee report below). 2) Removal and replacement of dead photinas at the Division 1 park and replacement of both picnic tables (watch out for slivers!) and replacement of missing laurels at the Division 3 park. 3) Newsletter reimbursement al ocation of $1 per HOA resident. Hope these wil qualify and become a reality. We wil let you know if we need to recruit some manpower to remove and replant bushes.

Neighborhood Garage Sale Our annual sale wil be held May 3rd and 4th, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. If you wish to
be placed on the map of sales, get in touch with me by April 26th at the latest. If you get organized enough to have a list of items you plan on sel ing, let me know so I can include details on the map. Even if you don’t get listed on the map, feel free to participate . A donation of $1 wil help cover the Little Nickel ad and poster board for the signs. I hope to pass out maps a day or two before the sale so you can make more copies if you want.
Hazen High School Auditorium Dedication A formal dedication ceremony is scheduled for Thursday,

parents only. Children must be five by 8/3/02. Immunizations must be current, bring child’s birth certificate. Ful day classes are first come; first serve, starting on May 2nd at $260/month with a $75 non-refundable deposit LNO (Ladies Night Out) First Wednesday of every month. approval on your home improvement projects (siding, painting, roofing, etc.) before you start the work.
Landscaping (Bob Rossi, 425-277-1048 or sabreblack@aol.com) The Landscape Committee is in the
process of having the large maple trees located at the entrance or Sunset removed and replaced with more suitable trees that wil not destroy the sidewalk and landscape because of their unique root system. The large evergreen trees behind the brick Summerwind sign on the East entrance of Sunset have been removed. Al homeowners should review their CC&R’s if not familiar with the landscape requirements that make our neighborhood a wonderful place to live. Also remember we are al responsible to pick up any leftover trash dropped after refuse day pickup. A clean environment iwil discourage violaters from trashing the area. It al our responsibility to maintain a Class A neighborhood. So don’t just pass the trash, pick it up. Have a good spring!

Traffic/Safety (Michael Silence, 425-227-4369 or msilence2000@yahoo.com) Neighbors: I would
encourage everyone to switch to a locking mailbox as soon as possible. When “convenience checks” as wel as al other mail were stolen from our mailbox, I contacted many of the people living nearby and found that checks had been stolen and used successful y at three houses in a row including my own! $3500 in my name, $1500 more from the family next door and an additional sum from the home next to them. Identity theft has not yet happened to me, but it would be sooooo easy! A locking mailbox does not guarantee that you are safe from fraud, but it is a simple insurance policy and the cost is not great. The attached form at the end of this newsletter is al you need to get started. First survey the neighbors you share a kiosk with to see how many support the idea. Let them know that the cost is approximately $107.51 (this may change with time) and that the whole process may take a few months.

Mark your calendars! We wil have a City sponsored Kick-Off Picnic including a barbeque and fun for everyone on Saturday, September 7th, at 4:00 PM. Think it wil be held at the Division 3 park. Watch for more details. Downtown Lots of changes happening in our little downtown. Have you been to the Melrose Grill (behind
McGowans) or the new Irish Brewpub, Giant’s Causeway? Don’t think we’l ever have too many eateries in our
fine town. What about The Met Wine and Coffee Bar? The Met is across the street from McLendons on the
corner of Second & Burnett Ave S. On Thursday, March 21st, 7 PM, The Met wil have a wine tasting event featuring Ben Smith of Cadence Winery. Try some wines accompanied by imported cheese with poppy seed crackers. Cost: $11 per person. Phone: 425-687-7989.
Starting June 18th through September 3rd, on Tuesday afternoons from 3 to 7 PM, we’re going to have a Renton
Farmer’s Market in the Piazza downtown park near our new Transit Center. Over 50 vendors have expressed
an interest so looks like it’s going to be worth checking out.
Strong possibility that Cirque Du Soleil’s Dralion show wil be coming to Renton this summer, although a
decision has not been made yet. If not Renton, they wil be here somewhere in the Seattle area. If you missed Saltimbanco, here’s a chance to see the Cirque local y. And if you attended Saltimbanco, I’m sure you’l need no convincing to start saving up now for this wonderful event.
Did you hear Kmart’s closing? Wonder what wil take its place?
Christmas Decorating Contest Winners We did something a bit different this year. We let the winners
pick which prize they wanted (those that were home). Feedback from the judges makes me think that this complicated the judging process even more than usual so watch for changes next year. By the way, judging is not easy or a fast process – it usual y takes about three hours. If you wish to volunteer for this arduous task, we’d like to know about it. Thanks to our generous sponsors (several new one’s this year and from the neighborhood), to the judges, and to each of you who helped brighten up Summerwind over the dark winter.

Cold medications recalled by FDA (Thanks to Marsha K. for sharing this bit of information with us.)
Al drugs containing Phenylpropanolamine are being recal ed. You may want to try cal ing the 800 number listed
on most drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. This ingredient has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine. 10 AM March 16th for the $12.5 mil ion Coal Creek Parkway improvement project. The work involves adding a travel lane in each direction as wel as a center left-turn lane, bike facilities, sidewalks, lighting and storm drainage for the arterial between Southeast 72nd and Southeast 84th streets. The Transportation Improvement Board’s Arterial Improvement Program provided $8.8 mil ion of the project funding. Marshbank Construction is the general contractor and Transystems was the engineer. have about a dozen Douglas Fir trees in my backyard available to anyone who would like some young trees. These trees are between 8” and 3’ in height and the only work required is to help me get them out of the ground and move and then plant them yourself. Contact Michael Silence at 425-227-4369 if a free tree is of interest to you. In my view, the most beautiful neighborhoods in our region are forested. Al the area now occupied by Summerwind was once forest, and we have the option to improve the quality of our air, water and soil by planting trees. Here’s a recipe for those of you who have decided to stop fighting the moss and use it to accentuate your garden
paths. Add chunks of moss to two cups of acidophilus milk, pour into blender, and puree. Put newspaper in bottom of some old flats, add a half-inch of moist soil, and pour the moss puree on top. Place cheesecloth on top of moss puree and watch the moss grow right through. Lift cheesecloth, cut it to fit any area, and lay it down like you would a carpet of sod. And here is a mole repel ant recipe: Mix together until foamy, two parts castor oil and one part Joy dish soap. Add two teaspoons of this mixture to one gal on of water. Spray in and around mole holes. Within a day, they’l head off to your neighbors yard instead of yours. A concerned neighbor wanted me to mention that some residents aren’t picking up after their dogs, especial y in the parks. If you are reading this and are guilty of this “crime” – a gentle reminder - what goes around comes around. Someday, somewhere, when you real y are pressed for time, you’re going to step in something awful, a sticky wad of gum, a little pile of you know what, and it could real y inconvenience you. So beware and take care – it’s your responsibility. Every house in the neighborhood has a little bag they can spare if you find yourself without one and you need to pick up after your dog. Summerwind Mailbox Conversion As many of you know, mail theft has been plaguing our
community lately. Your board members have approved a company to convert us to locking mailboxes on a “per kiosk” basis. The cost is about $110.00 (including tax) for each resident, for a box that opens for residents from the back. If you want to have one that opens from the front so you can stretch from your car to grab your mail, it’s another $50 per box. Use this form to gather signatures from al the residents at a given kiosk approving the conversion. If a given resident chooses not to participate, it is stil necessary to obtain their authorizing signature – unfortunately, the other residents wil be responsible for the non- participating resident’s share of the cost. Once the signatures are gathered, please contact Dave at Lock Box & Securities. His number is 206-232-4814. You may also wish to gather checks made out to LB&S. Once payment is made, Dave wil setup a convenient time to convert the boxes without interrupting mail service. Also, although you receive 2 keys to your box, you can request additional keys for no extra charge at the time of instal ation only. There wil be one locked box designated for “outgoing” mail.
