Please read instructions at least five days before your procedure. This prep causes multiple bowel movements. It may work within ten minutes or take as long as three hours. Remain within easy access of toilet facilities.
If you are taking Plavix, Coumadin, or Pradaxa please contact our office. Aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, Naprosyn and other arthritis medications are usually discontinued five days prior to the procedure.
Take your heart and blood pressure medications as usual the morning of your procedure.
Purchase at any pharmacy One Gallon of GoLYTELY, (prescription provided) or its equivalent i.e. (Peg 3350), and [4] Tablets of Dulcolax laxative (no prescription needed).
Do not follow instruction from the pharmacy. This sheet is the only instruction you will need.
The day before the procedure, have only clear liquids as much as you want (see list below). Solid food, milk or milk products are not allowed.
The day before the procedure between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m., take 2 tablets of Dulcolax then drink half the gallon of GoLYTELY, about a cup every 10 minutes or so. You may add crystal light to flavor the Go Lytely if you wish (no red or purple).
The day of your procedure, at least three hours before you leave your home, take the other 2 tablets of Dulcolax then drink the second half of the gallon of GoLYTELY, about a cup every 10 minutes or so. Absolutely nothing by mouth 2 hours before your procedure (this includes prep, juices, and water).
After the prep, your stool should be clear to yellow (urine color). If it is not, please call our office. If you do not follow these directions, your prep may not be adequate enough for us to complete your procedure, and you may have to reschedule.
You must have someone drive you home. You will not be allowed to leave by yourself. You will not be able to drive for the remainder of the day.
A forty-eight hour notice is required if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment or you will be charged a cancellation fee.
ACCEPTABLE CLEAR LIQUIDS: (Any of the following not colored red or purple)
Strained fruit juices without pulp, water, clear broth/bouillon, coffee/tea (without milk/creamer),
Gatorade preferred, soft drinks, Kool Aid/fruit-flavored drinks, Jell-O/popsicles. Diabetic Patients : Avoid diet sodas and juices. Drink regular sodas and juices during the preparation for this procedure. You will need the extra calories. If you take oral medications for diabetes take the oral medications in the morning the day prior to your procedure then hold medications until after your procedure.
If you take insulin for diabetes please make sure to monitor your glucose levels carefully. During the preparation take half of the normal insulin dose. Do not take long acting insulin the evening prior to your procedure. Check your glucose level the morning of your procedure. Hold insulin if level is low, otherwise you may take half the regular insulin in the morning.
