Unter Kaiser Karl VI. (1685-1740) erreichte die Musik in Österreich zweifellos einen Höhepunkt. Dies spiegelt sich im breiten Spektrum an Kompositionen wieder, die am Kaiserhof aufgeführt wurden und sich heute in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek oder im Archiv der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde befinden. Hofkapellmeister unter Karl VI. war anfangs Marc’ Antonio Ziani (um 1752-1715), nach dessen Tod Johann Joseph Fux (1660- 1741). Lieblingskomponist des Kaisers war jedoch Antonio Caldara. Caldara wurde bereits in jungen Jahren Chorknabe an San Marco, wo sein Vater als Geiger wirkte. Dort könnte er bei Giovanni Legrenzi (1626-1690) ersten Musikunterricht erhalten haben. Während er in Venedig als Chorsänger, Cellist und Violinist wirkte, komponierte er seine ersten Opern und sein op 1, eine Sonatensammlung, erschien im Druck. 1699 wurde Caldara Kapellmeister bei Ferdinand Karl Gonzaga in Mantua. Erste Kontakte mit dem späteren Karl VI. knüpfte Caldara 1707, bis 1716 hielt er sich jedoch immer wieder in Rom auf und komponierte unter anderem für die Familie Ottoboni und den Fürsten Ruspoli. Erst 1716 wurde er am Kaiserhof angestellt und ab 1717 schließlich In Anbetracht seines äußerst umfangreichen Œuvres, das, wie man annimmt über 3400 Kompositionen umfasst, von denen jedoch ein nicht unbeträchtlicher Teil verloren ging, ist es bemerkenswert wie selten Caldaras Musik bis heute auf den Spielplänen der Opernhäuser und Konzertsäle zu finden ist. Neben zahlreichen Motetten, Antiphonen, Psalmvertonungen und anderen kleineren geistlichen Kompositionen blieben allein über 50 Vertonungen des Messordinariums erhalten.
