Indications for surgery are shown in Table 2. The criteria for surgery are as follows: 1) patients with pre-dominantly localised disease, 2) patients with adequatecardiopulmonary reserve, and 3) patients whose treat-ment regimen had been composed of at least two effec-tive drugs to diminish the mycobacterial burden.
Group A patients (n ϭ 6) were operated upon due to medical treatment failure; surgery was regarded as alast resort to treat their disease. Group B patients (n ϭ15) were prepared for surgical intervention in the earlystages of second-line anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy;eight patients in this group (53.3%) failed to dem-onstrate sputum conversion prior to surgery. DISCUSSION
Using a combination of pulmonary resection and appropriate medical treatment, we have achieved a 92% response rate among patients with chronic MDR-TB, with strains resistant to a mean of 3.9 drugs (range 3–6).
